A man is in jail charged with attempted robbery after police say he tried to rob customers inside an upscale restaurant in Tacoma.
But instead, one customer turned the tables--and pulled out a gun.
Police say it all started Monday night when the suspect, Jon Meys walked into the Pacific Grill in Tacoma to order dinner. Manager Chip Venzone says he seemed a little off from the beginning, "When he first sat down and ordered a glass of MD 2020. It's a fortified wine not typically drunk by our clientele."
Meys heads to the restroom and the private room in the back where a group of doctors and pharmaceutical reps are having dinner. Police say he told the group he wanted their wallets and their money.
"At first they thought it was a joke, they had some friends at another table, until he lunged at the host of the party and grabbed him by the neck, and then they realized that it was very serious," says Venzone.
The host had no cash, and witnesses say Meys gets nervous. He actually heads back to his original table to sit down. Says Venzone, "he told the chef who asked him to leave that he just wanted some dinner, after attempting to rob these people."
But after staff tells him again he has to go, police say he heads back to the private room for another attempted robbery. By now the group has had enough, a doctor with a concealed weapons permit pulls out his gun and tells the suspect to get out. Says Venzone, "he tells him to keep walking and don't turn around."
The doctor walks Meys all the way out the door and by that time the police are around the corner ready to pick him up.
Venzone says the whole staff is grateful no one was hurt, and he'd like to thank the doctor again, "I would buy him a very nice dinner and a good bottle of wine."
