M.J. McDermott
I love weather and communicating the weather
to viewers, but I admit I haven't always been a "weather weenie"
(and, yes, that is what you call a weather nut).I am an Air Force
brat and grew up all over the U.S. My family ended up on the
Washington D.C. area, and I went to college the first time at the
University of Maryland. I was a science geek and started college as
a Physics major, but then I had a change of heart and switched my
major to Theatre. After graduating from Maryland, I moved to New
York City and did acting work.
Some people think my biggest claim to fame was
the day I did on "All My Children" I had a scene with Erica! After
a couple years of moderate success, I moved to Seattle where I did
theatre, radio and a children's TV show with Rosco the Raccoon on
KSTW TV-11. We were the last show in the region to have a live
children's audience. The raccoon and I were proud to have won an
Emmy Award for our work too. When that ended, I still wanted to
work in TV. I have always been intrigued by weather and, with my
background in Physics, I decided to study meteorology.
I went back to school and got my degree in
Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington. While at
the UW, I worked for Steve Pool at KOMO, then began to work as a
weather forecaster at Northwest Cable News. I was there for over 2
years, then came here. I have twin boys who love the weather and
help me forecast. Sometimes they do a better job than I do! I am
thrilled to be doing weather at Q13 FOX News. It's a great
team.
